New Census Data Will Shake Up Alabama Politics

Recent census data reveals significant population shifts in Alabama that are set to reshape the state’s political landscape. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Alabama’s population grew by approximately 49,000 people between July 2023 and July 2024, reaching a total of about 5.16 million residents. However, this growth is unevenly distributed, with urban areas thriving while rural regions continue to decline.

Urban Growth vs. Rural Decline

The most notable population increases are occurring in metropolitan areas such as Huntsville, Birmingham-Hoover, and Baldwin County. Huntsville alone added over 13,000 residents, making it the fastest-growing metro area in Alabama. Similarly, Birmingham-Hoover grew by around 6,300 residents, and Baldwin County, known for its coastal attractions, saw an increase of more than 7,500 people.
In contrast, rural counties—particularly those in the Black Belt region—are experiencing significant population losses. These declines pose challenges for local economies and could impact representation in the state legislature as population-based redistricting occurs.
